While blogging using wordpress, you may be worried that how to back up your posts and pages in order to prevent loss or backup and migrate to new site. Of course, the backup data is said to be urgent and regular, WordPress is no exception.
But now you are new to WordPress, so I will not temporarily say the professional and full backup methods because your website itself is still at localhost (if you follow from the beginning of the series. hours).
But right now, I will show you how to use a built-in WordPress tool to import / export content (Post, Page, Category, Tag, Comment). This means that you can export the content into a file in .xml format and can import it into another WordPress website or your own website if you have incident.
However, this export / import feature can only export the main content such as posts and pages. Plugins, themes, settings are not exported
Export posts wordpress
To export content, go to Dashboard -> Tools -> Export.
You can then choose the type of content to export, including:
- All Contents: Export all content related to Post and Page, menu, custom field and custom post type.
- Posts: Export all content related to Post.
- Pages: Export all content related to Page.
After selecting the content type, you can click on the Download Export File button, which will download to an .xml file containing the data you exported. Whether or not this file is large depends on whether you have a lot of content or not.
Import posts wordpress
With the .xml file that you’ve exported using WordPress, you can re-enter the content into any website using WordPress, including blogs at the service http://wordpress.com. To import content is also very simple, just go to Tools -> Import and select WordPress.
Perhaps it will ask you to install the WordPress Import plugin if your website doesn’t already have it, press Install and Activate like installing a regular plugin. Then, you select the .xml file containing your data on the computer and press the Upload file and import button to start importing data.
It will ask you to specify the content to be entered for a certain user on the website or create, you can choose any. Remember to tick the Download and import file attachments button so that it downloads images / media from the exported website and put it on the imported website. Finally click the Submit button to enter content.
When entered, if any content is already on your website, it will skip and enter only the new content. Also note that the Post date and time are also kept at the original time, not changing to the date and time you entered.
When to use import/ export wordpress
Actually later you will learn how to back up (backup) data and restore (restore) completely, so do not use this tool to backup data backup. But it will be extremely popular later if you use paid themes because paid themes often have a so-called “dummy content“, which is an existing content package and will be wrapped into a file. .xml, just import and run to the theme to display the most complete, then delete the content and post your own content.
So, this is a simple feature, but at least you should know to later encounter .xml file with theme packages that know to use this feature to enter content.
Some tips when import data post wordpress
When entering content, it is not always as smooth as this, especially for websites with a lot of content. I would like to write down a few notes for this import/ export feature
- If the .xml files are large and you import them on a WordPress website running on the host (not localhost), you may get a timeout error because of the waiting time. You can try 2 ,3 times and it might work.
- Images will not be downloaded successfully if the exported website has deleted them or is no longer working.
- When entering the content, please note the word Maximum Upload Size, which is the maximum size of the file that you are allowed to upload. Depending on the host, this size will be large or small, but the common host nowadays provides about 25~100 MB
